Our Academies

Lompoc High school offers some great academies to choose from. Our academies are here to help give the student experience and to give them a solid jump-start into their future.

Space Technology and Robotics Systems(STARS)

Academy Coordinator: John Galisky

The STARS program is a way for students to put their creative skills to work in the exciting world of engineering. The focus of the program is pre-engineering, applied specifically to the aerospace industry. Students participate in an integrated core curriculum of English, Math and Science plus a technology elective.
In 10th grade, students learn the process for making a new product and are introduced to computer-aided machining in Design and Engineering.

In 11th grade, students take Digital Electronics and Robotics. They learn about electronic components, digital logic, programming and design and build their own robots.

Finally, in the 12th grade, students learn more about manufacturing and solve real problems provided by our business partners while taking either ROP Advanced Drafting/CAD or Metals 3.

Lompoc High School’s newest CA Partnership Academy is a business academy. The CASH Academy (Career Awareness Starts Here) is designed to engage students in learning the business skills necessary to compete in our global economy – whether they are working in a family owned business or a large corporation. Students need to be prepared to make wise career, financial, managerial and ethical decisions as they enter the workforce.

The CASH Academy is designed as a small-learning community where English, Math and Social Studies courses and elective curriculum are designed with a business focus. With the cross-curricular teaching and co-curricular Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) activities, students have a lot of opportunities to tie in the academic standards. Hands-on projects are incorporated that challenge the students to set goals, plan, make projections, and make decisions to achieve their desired outcomes.

The CA Partnership Academy Grant, awarded by the California Department of Education, will fund the CASH Academy up to $42,000 in 2008-2009 as the 10th grade only academy is implemented. Next year, 10th and 11th grade students will be funded for up to $72,000. The third and subsequent years the CASH Academy will receive up to $81,000 in funding. The funding is based on the number of students participating with a funding cap of 30 students per grade level.

Lompoc High School was also fortunate to receive an extra of $10,000 planning grant for the next two years for the CASH Academy. This “Mentee” grant is also funded through the CDE.

The Lompoc High School teachers that are currently involved in the Academy are coordinator Sue Coupland (Business Education), David Dean (Business Education), Linda Garey (English), Bobby Harris (Social Studies), and Paul Terrones (Math).

Bridge Academy

Academy Coordinator: Don Cross

The Bridge Academy is a way to transition students who struggled in middle school with english and math. Our focus is to develop the students study habits while "Catching them up" with the necessary studies. We follow the same curriculum guide lines and standards as the "regular" class would. The difference is we have the students for a two hour block and small class size. This allows for more in-depth teaching, exploring and considerable "hands-on" teaching.
